Of Bohos and Bobos

I found out today that Bohemia is actually a place...
It's part of the Czech Republic (look to the right for the coat of arms).

So my question is:
What are we all doing here? Bohemians return to the land that gives you your name!

In fact, the assumption that gypsies and other wandering artists mostly came from here, was what led to the coining of the word 'bohemian' and all that it implies today.

Then the authors took it up, and it began to imply a sort of anti-conventionality, beginning with the gypsies and their lifestyle, one that soon began to be coveted by artists, painters and writers at the end of the 19th century.

Of course, amongst the Bohos themselves, are the Bobos, or bourgeiose bohemians, but we should devote another post to that word...

Today Venice Beach, Greenwich Village, Kathmandu, Ithaca (NY) are some of the places where modern Bohemian Communities live. What about where you live? And what about Bohemia itself?

I've been to Venice beach, LA and it's truly bohemian! Can show you photos of it at home

I'd never really given much thought to the word.

But thanks to you, now I will. And I'll have an interesting bit of trivia to show off as well!

So thanks.

Wow.... just stumbled across your blog looking for this very coat of arms, since I’m in the midst of writing my own (overdue) blog post on the dichotomy of the physical/mental Bohemia – since it’s part of my blog’s name and I actually happen to be half Bohemian genetically, and perhaps 100% Bohemian ideologically...

Fascinating blog though my dear... I'll find my way back here. I too am a dilettante in danger of having my attention diffused by too many fascinations and aims... a writer, filmmaker, artist, baker... conflicted dabbler.

Plus, (and this was just too weird) I just broke up with a Rohit (see comment above). It made this electronic encounter seem all the more predestined...

hey thanks for the comments :)
saw your blog, its looks very interesting too. So were you born in Bohemia? (The question sounds nice too)

And you are a baker too, wow, what do you bake?

And yes, this encounter does seem a bit predestined...

hi there! thanks for the blog props!

oh, sometimes i wish i could claim that I was entirely of Bohemian origin, but I was actually born in the united states - my dad (who was also born in the US) is 100% czech though...we still visit his distant family living in the bohemian countryside!

ha! you name it, i bake it... cakes, cookies, scones... bread, if i'm feeling ambitious. funny though, i think my baking always tends to impress indians more than it does westerners... probably because it's just less a part of your culture (like, i'm floored when somebody makes curry from scratch!)

what's your latest project? are you in the process of any more short films?
